Founded in 1974, the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) is today the region’s leading membership organization promoting sustainable energy practices in the built environment. We, as professionals in the fields of renewable energy and building, embrace whole systems thinking as the path to sustainability.
Our work is vital to increasing sustainability, especially in the building sector. In the United States, the building sector accounts for nearly half of all energy consumption. It also produces nearly half of all greenhouse gas emissions, making it the largest single contributor to climate change. To shape the built environment is to shape the future not only of our cities and towns, but also of our planet.
Headquartered in Greenfield, MA, NESEA (we say it “NESS-ee”) operates primarily in the northeastern United States—the six New England states plus New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. But we increasingly reach out to share ideas nationally and internationally. For example, we’ve collaborated with the German Consulate and the Upper Austria Trade Commission to bring cutting-edge products and information from Europe to our annual BuildingEnergy conference and trade show.
For more than four decades, NESEA has brought together the best minds in renewable energy, sustainable building, and energy efficiency. We are architects, engineers, educators, builders, energy consultants, manufacturers, installers, facilities managers, planners, students, and others focused on a sustainable built environment. The only way forward is together, and our community of professionals is our most valuable asset.
NESEA’s flagship program, BuildingEnergy Boston, is the region’s most established, cross-disciplinary conference & trade show for renewable energy and high performance building. Held in Boston each March and attracting international participants, we bring together architects, engineers, builders, policymakers, developers, planners, and building managers for three days of networking, accredited educational sessions, and a high-level trade show.
NESEA’s focus is on three core elements:
- A diverse, multidisciplinary network
NESEA’s overarching goal is to create, support, and inspire a multidisciplinary network of building and energy professionals who are guided by whole systems thinking. Our growing membership comprises architects, engineers, educators, builders, energy consultants, renewable energy manufacturers and installers, policy makers, facilities managers, planners, emerging professionals and students.
- Sustainable energy solutions for the built environment
We aim to promote the development of super-efficient building techniques, to make such techniques the standard, and to help bring clean, renewable energy into everyday use.
- Proven results in the field: no greenwashing here
There are a lot of so-called green techniques, products, and ideas out there. What works, and what doesn’t? We’re committed to results, and to separating the wheat from the chaff.
NESEA is a chapter of the American Solar Energy Society.
